“In keeping with our newsletter theme of “Investing In The Next Generation,” I’ve decided to provide you with the top 5 young filmmakers to keep your eye on. In no particular order, here are five young phenoms who I personally believe merit mention:
Graham Alexander – An incredibly talented young filmmaker (20) who, at the age of 19, sat on the feature film finalist panel at the 2009 San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival. Graham was on the panel because of his freshman effort The Sound of a Dirt Road, and he sat alongside representatives from powerhouses like Fireproof, Expelled, The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry and two lesser known independent films, The Widow’s Might and Pendragon. The catch? Young Graham made his film on a budget of $900.00 and shot the entire feature length film over a period of 18 days. What would Graham do with the budgets of some of his veteran peers?
Casson Brothers - Soncas Films is a film production company created by Stephen Casson and currently run by Stephen and his brothers Andrew, James, and Daniel. A young filmmaking production company, Soncas Films has a strong potential future. I really like their work and also their heart. At this point, you probably haven’t heard too much about them, but if my gut instinct is correct, you will. They recently wrapped production on their freshman effort, A Matter of Time. Their stated goal is “To make thought provoking films that are entertaining as well as bring a moral emphasis to the screen.”
Jessica and Anthony Rondina – Siblings Jessica (22) and Anthony (21) have formed the Gideon Production Group and have taken the LEGO (TM) building blocks and done some trailblazing work in stop motion animation with their Wars of Humanity Trilogy. While I was at Gideon 2009, I was hanging out with multiple award winning producer and friend Mitchell Galin who could not stop talking about this talented duo. It seemed that everywhere I went, at the 2009 and other Christian media events, I would hear the Rondinas’ names whispered. I don’t think it will be long before you see their name in lights.
Jay Kizer and Andrew Givler – I was blessed to meet this young duo early last year and had the chance to spend time with them again recently while they were in Albuquerque. Jay (20) created Greenstorm Film and quickly brought on his right hand man, Andrew (20). These two, along with Mary Katherine Qualls and several others, are working diligently on what the Lord has called them to. They are treating their first work, The Protagonist, as their own private film school. Greenstorm has some interesting plans for the future and, having had the pleasure of meeting with them twice now, I have a feeling that they are going to do some very special things. Keep your eye on Greenstorm; I expect great things from them as they mature in their craft.
John Moore and David Heustis – This young team is being used of God in amazing ways already. At the young age of 20, John and partner David Heustis created HeuMoore Productions and put together their freshman feature length effort, The Widow’s Might. The Widow’s Might left the 2009 San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival with both the Audience Choice Award and the Best of Festival Award, which included the Jubilee Prize of $101,000. John and David have an interesting story of how they were bonded for life, and I expect to see and hear more from them in the near future. What are you working on guys? Keep HOSFU posted!
To be fair, there are many, many other young filmmakers who I could mention. Perhaps on another Top 5. But for now, these 5 will keep you busy. To the veterans I say, follow them, encourage them, mentor them and bless them with your time. To investors I say, get in early! To fans I say, get to know them and become grassroots fans who will help them spread the word about their work. To everyone I say, keep them in your prayers and when you see their names on the silver screen, remember you heard it from HOSFU first!”
